Tesla is finally addressing a long-standing headache for Gen 3 Wall Connector owners. After years of connectivity struggles, a new software update is rolling out that appears to fix a frustrating Wi-Fi compatibility issue involving modern security protocols.
The problem, which has been documented in detail on the Tesla Motors Club forum, centers on the Wall Connector’s inability to stay connected to networks using WPA3 or WPA2/WPA3 mixed-mode security. While the Generation 3 Wall Connector officially launched over six years ago in January 2020, reports of these specific Wi-Fi drops began surfacing in early 2021.
A History of Connectivity Drops
For many users, the issue was a "ghost in the machine." Owners of modern mesh systems like Eero, Ubiquiti, and Google Nest Wi-Fi Pro found that their chargers would either refuse to connect or drop off the network entirely after an hour. One user in 2021 noted.
The frustration grew as Tesla integrated the Wall Connector into its mobile app. Because the app requires a stable Wi-Fi connection for real-time data and firmware updates, users with modern routers were essentially locked out of these features. Many were forced to create a separate, less secure Wi-Fi network just for the charger. As one owner put it, "It’s making me insane that this is STILL an issue."
The problem actually seemed to be resolved briefly in late 2024 with firmware version 24.44.3, only to break again when the 25.x branch of software rolled out. This "one step forward, two steps back" cycle led some users to find hacky workarounds, like using router settings to block Tesla’s update servers (such as firmware.tesla.com) just to stay on the older, working version.
Fix Confirmed in Update 26.2
The good news is that the latest firmware, version 26.2.0, seems to have permanently cracked the case. Rolling out more widely since mid-February, users are reporting that auto-negotiation with WPA3 is finally stable. One owner shared, "Tesla sent me a new firmware for the wall connector 26.2 and it fixed the auto negotiation on my Eero network with WPA3 enabled. Hopefully this is public soon!"
Unlike a Tesla vehicle, you cannot manually force a Wall Connector to update. It typically happens silently in the background overnight. You can verify your current software version in the Tesla app by navigating to Home > Settings > My Home Info and looking under "My Products."
Workarounds While You Wait
If your charger hasn't updated yet and you're still struggling to stay online, the most reliable workaround remains creating a dedicated 2.4 GHz Guest SSID on your router that uses the WPA2-Personal protocol only. This allows the hardware to bypass the complex "handshake" issues found in WPA3. While some users have successfully rolled back firmware manually, it would generally be easier to just wait for the 26.2 update to hit your unit.
This fix comes at a busy time for Tesla’s charging division, which also recently launched a six-foot pedestal for the Gen 3 hardware. With the software finally catching up to modern router standards, owners can finally enjoy the full suite of features without their charger vanishing from the network.
