⚡️ The Edlectric Services: Post-Storm Electrical Safety Checklist

A Guide for Metro Atlanta Homeowners & Businesses

When the clouds clear after a major Georgia storm, your first instinct is to check for roof leaks or broken windows. However, electrical hazards are often invisible and far more dangerous. Use this checklist to safely audit your property.

1. External Visual Inspection (Safety First!)

  • [ ] Check the Service Mast: Is the metal pipe attached to your roof bent, leaning, or pulled away from the house?
  • [ ] Inspect the Meter Base: Is the glass meter box cracked or hanging loosely?
  • [ ] Look for Downed Lines: Are there any wires touching the ground, your fence, or a fallen tree?
⚠️ DANGER: Stay at least 35 feet away from any downed wire. Assume all wires are energized.
  • [ ] Examine Outdoor Outlets: Are your GFCI covers still intact, or were they blown off by high winds?

2. Interior Warning Signs

  • [ ] The "Sniff Test": Do you smell a "fishy" or "burnt plastic" odor near your electrical panel or outlets?
  • [ ] The "Sound Test": Hear any buzzing, sizzling, or popping coming from your walls or breaker box?
  • [ ] Flickering Lights: Even if the power is back on, are your lights dimming or surging? (This often indicates a damaged "neutral" wire).
  • [ ] Breaker Issues: Is your main breaker tripping repeatedly? Do not force it to stay on.

3. Water Exposure (NEC Compliance)

  • [ ] Flooded Outlets: Did water reach the level of your baseboard outlets?
  • [ ] Panel Dampness: Is there any evidence of water dripping inside your electrical panel?
Pro Tip: According to NEC 110.12(B), any electrical equipment submerged or contaminated by water must be evaluated by a professional—often, internal components like breakers must be replaced to prevent future fires.
